A “Frenzy” of a Restoration – Part 1
Tagged Under : Arcade, Berzerk, Frenzy, Projects, Restorations, Stern
Picked up a Stern Frenzy a few months back and since then have been trying to decide how I’d like to tackle this project. First of all, it’s a very clean specimen. However it’s far from perfect. As you can see, the side art is near perfect.
The Bezel is nice but has the normal flaking that a little “Triple Thick” will preserve it pretty nicely.
The Control Panel and CPO is clean and should be fairly easy to “preserve” with a little careful masking and repainting the outer edge and some touching up some minor chips.
My marquee is “clean” but probably the roughest part of the cabinet. Once again, “Triple Thick” should at least save it from further decay.
The PCB’s are very clean and best of all it came with “Mark Spaeth’s Frenzy Kit” which allows me to get my “Berzerk Fix” as needed.
Best of all, IT WORKS!!!
Now, when you consider restoring a Frenzy you need to remember…
1) Side Art doesn’t exist.
2) Control Panel Overlay is Screened (or painted) right to the Control Panel.
3) Reproduction Marquee doesn’t exist.
4) Reproduction Bezel doesn’t exist.
So, when you take those four obstacles in consideration you need to decide “HOW FAR” you want to go as far as “restoring” a Frenzy. So, I decided that I’d do more of a “refresh” restoration.
Because the side art is so clean I’d like to “SAVE IT”. As you can see, “Magic Eraser and a little Napta the artwork looks near mint. Too bad it’s still some of the worst looking artwork ever. But hey, it is what it is and at least it cleaned up nicely.
I then clean the inside out by vacuuming it out and wiping it down with napta and after that dried good I wiped it out with Denatured alcohol.
Wrapping up “part one” of my restoration I applied a little “Bondo”.
Look for “Part Two” of my Frenzy Restoration fairly soon. “Part Two” I will be finishing up the light body work, masking the side art and painting.
